Reading Lab & Syntactic Skeleton Framework
Intermediate readers suffer from “Subvocal Exhaustion”: looking up every 3rd word in a dictionary, losing the author's train of thought, and re-reading 40-word sentences 4 times. Break through with Syntactic Skeleton Parsing.
The 3-Rule Syntactic Skeleton Parsing Technique
Find the Finite Verb First
In complex academic sentences (40+ words), ignore prepositional phrases and participial modifiers immediately. Locate the primary subject and its core finite verb.
Treat Preposition Clusters as Brackets
Mentally place brackets around (in the context of...), (with respect to...). Read the core trunk first, then layer the modifier branches back in.
The 80/20 Lexical Threshold
If an unknown word does not alter the logical valence (positive vs negative, cause vs effect), skip it! Never break your reading flow unless the word appears 3+ times in the chapter.
