Topic 4: Exam Ceiling Breaker

IELTS 6.0 → 7.5+ Plateau Breakthrough

Millions of candidates are perpetually trapped at Band 6.0 or 6.5. Doing 50 more mock tests won't move your score. You must fix the structural habits that differentiate Band 6 (repetitive phrasing, falling for distractors) from Band 7.5+ (cohesive synthesis).

Listening Trap: Section 3 & 4 Distractors

Why Band 6 Candidates Pick Distractor Options

In Section 3 (academic seminar dialogue), IELTS examiners intentionally speak the exact keyword from Option A, only to negate it 3 seconds later with “Well, actually I was inclined to agree until Dr. Miller showed me the revised dataset.”

The Fix: Never write the first noun you hear. Train yourself to listen for the resolution marker (“whereas”, “initially... but ultimately”). Practice Section 3 using our Dictation Practice to track rapid speaker agreement changes.
Writing Task 2 Trap: The "List of Examples" Fallacy

Band 6 Lists Ideas; Band 8 Develops Chains of Logic

Band 6 candidates write 3 separate superficial ideas in a paragraph: “Firstly, traffic is bad. Secondly, pollution hurts health. Also, buses are late.” Band 7.5+ writers write ONE unified idea, but extend it across 4 causal steps (Idea → Explanation → Concrete Mechanism → Final Consequence).

The Fix: Use our Writing Booster micro-tasks. Force yourself to connect ideas using hinge on, in light of, and consequently.
