Urban Planning: Green Parks vs. Commercial Development
Dr. Brenda Gupta
Course InstructorThis week we are discussing urban land allocation. High-density cities face severe shortages of available space. When city governments acquire unused land in downtown cores, should they prioritize developing green public parks or allocating the property for commercial infrastructure, such as shopping complexes or office buildings? What is your view?
“I believe cities should definitely prioritize commercial spaces. Commercial developments create high-paying jobs, expand the municipal tax base, and stimulate local retail. The tax revenue collected can then be used to support public schools and transit systems, which benefits all residents.”
“I disagree with Kelly. Urban residents already suffer from severe pollution and chronic stress. Public green spaces are vital for mental well-being, recreation, and physical health. Once open land is covered in concrete, it can almost never be converted back into nature.”
